WHAT IS GASTRIC BALLOON?
Gastric balloon is a silicone balloon that is inflated with air or liquid to a volume of 400-700 cc after it is placed in the stomach. It is a temporary weight loss method applied endoscopically for those who cannot lose weight with diet and exercise, who do not want to have surgery and who have a high risk of surgery. The gastric balloon should be removed after 6 months to 1 year after its placement. It cannot be applied in cases of gastric ulcer, large gastric hernia and pregnancy. Nausea, pain, ulcers, gastric bleeding, gastric perforation, intestinal obstruction are very rare complications.
WHAT ARE THE TECHNIQUES USED IN GASTRIC BALLOON SURGERY?
The gastric balloon is placed in the stomach with the endoscopic method under general anesthesia. The balloon placed in the stomach is inflated with serum using a special extension line and the procedure is completed. The process takes around 30 minutes. After the patient wakes up, they are kept under observation for a while and can be discharged the same day.
After the gastric balloon is inserted, it is removed within 6 months to 1 year. During this period, if the person follows the doctor's recommendations and pays attention to their eating habits and lifestyle, they reach the desired weight.
IN WHICH SITUATIONS CAN YOU HAVE GASTRIC BALLOON SURGERY?
Although gastric balloon is a non-surgical method, it is an endoscopic application. After the balloon is placed in the stomach, it is inflated as much as the doctor deems appropriate. The gastric balloon has a silicone structure and it occupies space in the stomach, allowing the person to reach the feeling of fullness early. It is generally applied to people who cannot lose weight with diet programs or exercises but do not want to have surgery or whose body mass index is not suitable for surgery. Persons for whom gastric balloon application cannot be performed are those who have ulcers in their stomach, large gastric hernia or pregnant women. After the gastric balloon is placed, it should be removed after 6 months to 1 year.
RECOVERY PROCESS AFTER GASTRIC BALLOON SURGERY
You may have small amounts of clear liquid, starting about six hours after the procedure. The liquid diet usually continues until the beginning of the second week, when you can start eating soft foods. You will likely be able to start eating normal foods about three weeks after the intragastric balloon is placed.
DOES THE GASTRIC BALLOON BURST?
During the period of 6-month or 1-year balloons, the risk is very, very low. However, the gastric balloon is filled with a blue liquid against the risk of the balloon bursting.
HOW LONG DOES THE GASTRIC BALLOON APPLICATION TAKE?
This application is performed under anesthesia. First of all, the patient is put to sleep with general anesthesia, then the procedure is performed in a very short time like 5 minutes. After the procedure, the patient wakes up after a rest of 10-15 minutes, and there is no obstacle in returning to daily life immediately afterwards.
